Social Benefits of Education

Number of students doesn't necessarily lead to a broad breadth of topics. Cost of land, security, repairs, heating, cooling, and local support of programs really changes that. While money per student doesn't exactly correlate with outcome, it does closely match opportunity. (Demographics match more closely to outcome.)
PE is essential for health. I was able at my rural school to replace my PE credits with 'weightlifting' which essentially meant learning how to do stretching and training exercises. It's not about energy release after fourth grade, it's about learning how to develop your body in a healthy manner. Bones and organs fail if you do not take care of them, especially when growing. This is what PE is for: So that you have an opportunity to have a long life in order to use what education was made available to you.
My sister's magnate high school had no sports teams, no PE courses - but they did have health courses, aerobic dance, and other physical education rather than traditional.
Admittedly, many PE courses traditionally are shit. But more of that comes from a disregard for sciences, health, and the physical portion of the education for overall sports, which do not always fit with all the students. And paying shit wages for a job that requires master's or better degrees and detailed continual education is really a huge problem.

I learned how to make cheeseballs in 7th grade. We had 3 classes that period to split between. PE, Home Ec, and wood shop that everyone had to take. Home ec might as well have been intro to chemistry in cooking, because it only had cooking cheeseballs and meatballs, and explanation why cakes rise.Maj wrote:They used to call it Home Economics, but by the time that I was forced to take it, it was "How to make a cupcake out of felt" and "the colors on the color-wheel." It should have been basic shopping techniques, balancing a checkbook, boiling water, and sewing on a button.shadzar wrote:So they need to just teach what actually helps people.
I cannot to this day cook indoors.
I recall in the 50's they taught at least female to cook many things, how to repair your own clothes, etc. Now it is don't fix anyhting just throw it out and buy a new one.
@vitm: Archery? Around here they only know about shotguns for long range anything. I would have learned shooting cans with a shotgun in this redneck valley of retards. Soccer? That would mean buying some nets to put on the end of the football field. You cannot put ANYTHING on a football field or you would ruin it!
The state of education is poor because the country lets states decide the curriculum. Many states are technological backwaters. You cannot teach with outdated textbooks either, and my high school had the same tattered books for 30 years. They got new ones after I had passed the classes that updated the periodic table to have 108 elements on it the next year. I learned of the 90 something elements which was woefully outdate.
But you cannot spend it on new books, because you have to make sure the gym has brand new balls every year. WTF?!?!?!?!
You have to update the score board with the latest tech, but no new books.
Get the gym repainted each year as well the basketball goals. Don't forget the manicured football and baseball fields. Even when it is not in season you much paint the lines down and do more than just standard mowing.
So while you may have had it, you are in like a small percentage where education actually matters to spend time, money or effort on it. Most of the country doesn't put that much into it. Thank god they finally got VCRs before I left school and retired those fire hazard of projectors. But still they are using VCRs and haven't been able to get any DVD players locally to play the newest material because the school cannot afford $40 and a trip to Walmart to pick up one.
@Crissa: We had no security. No need for any so no need for any spent on it. Remember they didn't even bother with bullies to curtail their activities. That was about the worst other than smoking behind the cafeteria. Yeah energy release isn't all, but was the best way I could think of it. Some time to give your mind a chance to absorb but still doing something, but you don't need some PE curriculum. Better yet you don't need some exercise drill instructor. Let people walk around the track or crap for a little leg stretching. Aerobic exercise without a doctor is going to cause all those obese kids to have problems later in life, not help them. Hell they could have heart attacks even in lower grades because they cannot physically handle the stress. You need something the not be sitting on your as all the time in school, and at jobs; but you don't need the PE the way it is. It needs reform beyond the Reagan or Arnold systems of exercise and crap.
And they need to offer more. Plan ahead and see what people in middle schools might want and try to offer it to them when they get to high school. They want to learn Japanese, then reduce the number of Spanish teachers and hire a Japanese teacher.
Tenure is another problem in education because they cannot fire a teacher that no longer does their job properly. Like any other job, the employee needs to be evaluated on a regular basis and replaced when they get lax in duties. We might end up with better teachers that way, and be able to pay them more for the good ones, rather than ones that have been around the longest. Reason being the ones being around for the longest will be the goods ones and worth their pay rate.
It just needs to be a national education system rather than competing by state to come up with the best system they can provide, but the best system the country can provide for all our youths. Then they can move anywhere they can get a job and be just as capable as anyone else.

We use the Emancipation Proclamation everyday as well, but for the decent people they don't have to think about it to use it.
Like the law of gravity and other things that are a part of your life, you don't have to discuss them or know all the particulars in order for them to exist.
Whether someone knows it or not at any point in their life, the Earth will not stop revolving around the Sun because they are unaware of it.
Not saying they shouldn't teach the solar system info to people, just saying you don't really use it in daily life, wherein things like income taxes, and household budgets, and such are things we MUST deal with daily that many people don't understand and need to.
Also how many people even remember what the Magna Carta was or does/did for them after learning it in school? They just carry on living and forgetting it because it isn't something that will change, but those thing it produced can change which go on everyday that people have more importance to look at like health care, consumer protection advisory by the federal gov, etc.
People know all about the Boston Tea Party, yet somehow still accept it and being taxed twice. Once for money when it is earned, and again when it is spent. Double taxation comes back around but it ignored. Well the tea-baggers (new age ones, not the original ones) get the Boston Tea Party, but are using it for the wrong reason right now....

Um, yeah. You can. Tenured professors do in fact get fired. Not only that, it's extremely difficult to get a tenured position. All Tenure means is that you can't be fired for political reasons, you can still get fired for doing a terrible job, being convicted of a felony, sexual harassment, etc.shadzar wrote: Tenure is another problem in education because they cannot fire a teacher that no longer does their job properly.
So basically, you're saying that you want it to be legal to fire tenured professors because they voted for someone you disagreed with, or because they broke wind in your presence, or just for shits and giggles? That's what you are saying.

Research groups usually depend on the stability of being run by a tenured professor. If your PI might not be around next month, things get a bit stressful.Count_Arioch_the_28th wrote:Um, yeah. To be fair, Shadzar also doesn't like the idea of teaching other languages*. Or, apparently, much of anything. Actually, he would have liked our Home Ec, as that had a brief course in budget-management, which anyone can benefit from once they leave school.
And I hated PE, but I still think it's important, especially with Australia overtaking America as the Land of the Fat.
*We were taught Japanese as a compulsory language from grades 3-8, with the option to continue right to the end. I switched schools after year 8 though, and they didn't have that option. Even now I still remember enough that I could just about get by (and weirdly, I've held fluent conversations in my dreams, where I wake up and remember the actual moon-speak).
So learning it back then is a really good idea. Because more people need to speak multiple languages. Fuck the "You come to my country, you speak English. And if I go overseas I'll just speak English slowly and loudly." attitude.

The fat little shits have to be forced to exercise. PE stays.
Children should be forced to learn the following. Science, a second language, comparative world religion, political theory, economic theory and human rights. Kids includes everyone who is 20 or less. The rest is optional.
There needs to be on the job training available for older kids who aren't going to do University level courses. Theres far too much pressure to go to Uni and spend four years on a degree that won't get used. I'm a server admin and thats just not a Uni degree, same goes for a lot of jobs.

PE is necessary, if for nothing else, then to teach kids that some exercise is good for them. Hell, it should be compulsory, for the good of all lazy fatasses, and especially in high school. Hell, it would be good if there was more of it. Sadly, its impossible.
And I love that today, when almost every country tries, or wants to have its citizens learn at least two or three different major world languages, there is still at least one person that thinks people should not speak more than one language.
Also, I love how US citizen's ignorance of the world is (largely unjustly from my experience) a running joke throughout the world, and still, there is also one person who thinks history should not be taught at schools.
I mean, no, seriously, have you stopped to think beyond your personal frustrations for just a bit?

People who don't know what they are talking about should not make policy.
In a democracy, everyone makes policy.
Subjects important to policy making are mandatory and should be mandatory in any democracy. History, Math, Science, World Culture, Economics, etc.
People who are against teaching those subjects are against Democracy.

Let’s go back to square 0: What is the purpose of education?
The purpose of education is to learn.
Square 1: Learn what?
Stuff
WRONG!
The purpose of education is to learn the art of learning; to study the art of studying. Most of everything you learn is merely exercises in various tools you will need to learn all the new stuff you will encounter throughout your life.
There were no computers in my high school in 1979 when I graduated; I had to go to AP courses at the local college just to have access to a Commodore PET 2001 which only one year old when I started my senior year in the fall of 1978.
No personal computer, no windows, no internet, not even a cell phone.
Think about that when you realize how many 70 and 80 year olds are out there actively using the internet. (The ones who don’t were generally corporate executives who always had other people to do that kind of work for them … and their companies suffered as a result in the long term.)
When I went to college I studied first level physics. I studied lots of formulas and stuff. Why? So I could understand how to study formulas and stuff. Almost 90% of what I had to study is institutively obvious to anyone who has had 3 months of differential equations.
That is not to say “stuff” isn’t important, in a Monty Python sort of way. (“When you are a King you have to know these things.”) But it is the “art” of collecting stuff and then applying stuff to new situations that is the fundamental lesson of school, not per se the stuff itself.
Ironically, that applies to PE as well.

The place I work at is very multi-cultural (Which I consider it a boon, I actually enjoy it). I'm the only white person there that at least tries to speak to people in their native language. Granted, the reactions I get tend to show my accent is a lot worse than I assume, but I've much improved my Spanish, and I've picked up a couple words of Mandarin, Kurdish, and Arabic in my time here.
In this moment, I am Ur-phoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my int score.
Right Tzor. Random shit for the sake of everyone learning random shit is of no use. Compulsory learning other languages, history, etc whatever is of no use.
How often does that steel worked need to go to another country to speak another language? How much of that other language will they remember later in life or even be able to make use of?
People stuck in teaching people to be well random end up with people learning trivial shit that will have no bearing on their later life. That is the damn problem. Like with Literature teaching people what to think of books or stories. They need to be taught how to think for themselves.
Remember when religion was taught all throughout schools and it ruled everyone life? Remember when the world was flat?
There is a county just this day that had a 9 year old boy borrow a DragonBall Z comic from school and the parent got upset there was a younger boy in the book nude because of his upbringing that went to the city council, and they banned the comic form not only elementar6y schools, but middle and high schools as well; all the while stating that these types of books are good for cultural learning.
Then why didn't they try to teach the culture shown in the book in order to learn about it, rather than ban it from all schools including high schools?
Schools do NOT care about actually teaching otherwise they wouldn't still be banning books, but look at them before they say we need to ban them. People running schools and education are afraid that people might learn something and think different from them.
If a Mexican comes to America, then they should learn to adapt to include speaking the language. Likewise if I go to another country I should learn their language. That is the responsibility of the traveler. Fuck this I need to speak and write everything in Mexican because we are being overrun with them.
Why don't I write in Mexican on these forums? because they are English speaking. I haven't seen a Mexican speaking section for these forums. Why don't I say Spanish, because I have never heard Spanish, nor met someone form Spain; and met plenty of Mexicans, and they will tell you right fast they are not Hispanic, they are Mexican, they don't speak Spanish, they speak Mexican.
Someone tell me why typewriters are no longer taught how to use in schools, if they think things don't need to change, and why they don't teach the world as being flat. Don't give me an excuse about technology, because typewriters still exist and are cheaper than a computer and printer.
I will tell you why, because they are too expensive to keep for schools.
Since that can change, so can other things. Again people PE as a CLASS, needs to be removed; and just the time to exercise there without some kind of formal teaching. Go see a doctor before you do ANY kind of exercise. No routine works for everyone and is not helpful to everyone. Exercise is fine, but not an hour of sit-ups or shit like that.
Schools need to teach people thing needed for their career. The more educated people we have the more educated employees and workers we have.
I may have liked that Home-Ec class that actually taught stuff. Most people in this country do NOT work in any kind of office job, and have little to no use for most of the "stuff" they learned in school. Also many struggle with day to day life things that was never taught in schools. This is where the problem is. Also the concept of you live in city X so go to school X because of districts. I am sure every family can just move to a district that will allow their child to go to a decent school with a decent curriculum right?
Again, schools need to look at things with a focused view, and focused courses. What does everyone need to know when the get out of school. That needs to be taught. Focused education is better than a cluster fuck of trivial crap.

If compulsory education were reduced to the minimum that every person needs at some point, we'd seriously be reducing the educational system to the point of "reading, writing, and arithmetic". That's dumb beyond belief, and even dumber when you realize that you never know that you'll never have use for a particular ability until you're already dead.
And a lot of the classes you're railing against are generally useful beyond their actual content when taught decently well. Language classes and Literature allow you to understand how language works and improves your ability to communicate. History and politics give perspective on the current state of the world. The sciences are all about analytical thought and reasoning. All of these things carry over into actual real life, even if you never professionally critique books or synthesize chemicals or run for office, unless you decide to be a total recluse.
Seriously, you've argued against people learning the subjects of history, language, literature, health and fitness... from the looks of it, I fully expect you to be against teaching science or "higher" mathematics (meaning algebra) in school, since that's not "needed for [most peoples'] career". What's left? Basic literacy, arithmetic, home economics, and shop class? Fuck that.
The current educational system is bad. Sure. That's not in question. But that's because the non-"essential" (in your apparent view) subjects are often taught poorly, not because they're taught at all.

This is objectively false. The rest of your argument hinges on this, so I don't even have to engage it. People learning random shit literally increases their lifespan. Above and beyond the fact that people who learn more random shit are more informed voters, are less prone to committing violent crime, and are more useful and productive in society - the personal benefit is rather tremendously large. It drives off Alzheimers and actively makes you live longer.Shadzar wrote:Right Tzor. Random shit for the sake of everyone learning random shit is of no use.

Random shit is random shit only when devoid of context, when it is just data. Random shit in context never stays random shit - it becomes analysis and promotes future synthesis, ie LEARNING.
So yes, kids have to fucking learn about the Magna Carta and what the major world tribes are (Han, Slavs, etc) all that other "random shit", because without it they don't fucking understand history or even other cultures.
And kids need to fucking take PE and they need to learn martial arts. Every single child needs to know when and how to actively take responsibility for their own well-being.

This is this stupidity I am talking about that people don't know what people need to learn.
No the 3 R's are not the only things people need. More retardation because of the standard system. You know what the sad part is...people still graduating high school that cannot read or write.
You need sciences. You need to know not to mix ammonia and bleach. You don't need to know how a nuclear plant works in high school. Unless, you have already got the curriculum to the point where high school is preparing for jobs, rather than preparing for further education which MOST people do not get due to costs. Then if that is all in place, teaching someone wanting to go into the nuclear power profession or study and development should be taught it in high school.
The reason this country is in the sorry state it is in now with the economy and health care, is because these things aren't taught ANYWHERE. Where do they teach about health insurance, loans for houses, etc? Nowhere I have ever seen. They touch basic info, and then leave everyone out to dry when it comes to dealing with it, and people need to hire a lawyer to explain the things to them. This is the problem. The system is built so people do NOT learn what is needed to use the system.
If PE works, then someone explain why the fuck so many are morbidly obese?
IF education in general is so god, then why do so many people come to me with basic 1040s to file and cannot do their own taxes with no deductibles or other things filing as single? (not getting into accounting specifics to derail the thread.)
Dump the fucking PE classes, and teach people to cook so they don't have to go eat at a fast food dive so they CAN eat healthy. PUT MCDONALDS OUT OF BUSINESS!
Teach people how to do their fucking taxes. PUT ME OT OF A FUCKING JOB!
Basic needs of humans are air, water, food, and shelter. People breathe on reflex, not everyone can find safe water, not everyone can get their own food, and shelter is fucked because it is a commodity for banks.
So the system is fucked, and people need to learn how to use it in order to LIVE. Climbing a rope and playing dodgeball do nothing to help people live, nor does jumping jacks do anything for the kid in a wheelchair.
The inability for many here to think is the whole problem with the educational system, where it teaches people WHAT to think, not HOW to think.
Teach what people NEED to know, not things they won't use. Do regular evaluations for interest to what someone would be good at...you know those aptitude tests. Then give them the fucking courses based on what aptitude, interest, and abilities they have!
Teach the student, not the class!
Play the game, not the rules.

I will disagree strongly here, but with the understanding that the United States is unique among nations in one way; it’s really huge. If you go to most places in the world, you can’t drive what to us would be two states away without going to a place where another language is spoken. (I may not be completely familiar with all the dialects in China, so this may be the one exception.) In India, there are so many languages that the common language in all urban areas is English.shadzar wrote:Right Tzor. Random shit for the sake of everyone learning random shit is of no use. Compulsory learning other languages, history, etc whatever is of no use.
But hey, who cares about “distance?” This is the 21st century and when you are old and gray and using twitter (I’m told twitter is for us old farts) then you will need to read all the twitters you get from all over the world, in a variety of languages. You may have to sell your services all over the world. You may have to effectively communicate with your Chinese bosses after China pwns the United States when the dollar collapses in a few years.
By the way, as a point of fact all those who can fill out a basic 1040 (why aren’t they using the EZ form … probably because they are smart enough to know they get more back) or buy simple software to do their taxes aren’t the ones seeing you in the first place!ostMay importantlyway, ouyay illway eednay otay ebay ableway otay eadray andway itewray igPay atinLay inway orderway otay effectivelyway ommunicatecay ithoutway eingbay onitoredmay ybay Emperorway Obama'sway oughtthay olicepay.
Last and not least, what you need and what is being done is not the same. On the other hand, not everything that is being done is in and of itself evil. Reading, when taught well and correctly works. History, when taught well and correctly works. PE; when taught well and correctly works. I’m the last one to give infinite praises to the current set of baseless bureaucrats in the education system.
You want censorship (or the lack thereof); you should have seen my Roman Catholic High School. Freshman year, required reading was the “Bicentennial Series,” starting with “The Bastard.” In the early chapters the protagonist while visiting his half brother for a share of his heritage, rolls in the hay (literally) with his half brother’s faineance, taking away her virginity (being too stupid to realize this because most of his prior sex encounters were with French rural sluts) and getting her pregnant at the same time.
Climbing a rope and playing dodgeball are supposed to be fun.
You are right that teaching a class and forgetting individual students is wrong.
But physical education is far more important later in life than you seem to think. I know your view will change in twenty years, but that's twenty years to late.

Who the hell have you ever met that climbs a rope for fun? Do you go around today playing dodgeball?Crissa wrote:Climbing a rope and playing dodgeball are supposed to be fun.

Fun for who, the teacher?
Have you ever tried fucking asking someone if they actually like the thing, before deciding they will think it is fun?
"4th Edition D&D is fun and everyone will like it, just trust us."
Sounds similar doesn't it?
They don't care in schools what people have interest in. Be it in PE or anything else, they only care about teaching what the state says should be taught, not whether it will help the majority or not.
Again why they need to evaluate interest of the individual. That way they know WHAT to teach the individual, but they are only focused on teaching the class/masses at any cost even the cost of the education they are trying to provide.
You would do it in one way that you KNOW will counter the reason you are doing it in the first place? That is just stupid for them to do.
There was for a short time a commercial with the father from Fresh Prince on it saying how they had been screwing up for years teaching people and it was going to be changed to actually teach the students, not the course. Sadly that commercial I can no longer find, but was within the past two years. That is what they need to do, and you cannot teach an individual or make any decision for them, without knowing who they are. I recall one student having to go to the hospital for being forced to drink their milk in school, and they were allergic to dairy. But everoyne is the same, so they needed it and the teachers didn't have time to make sure to check if there would be adverse affects.
Laziness is the problem with education, because they do NOT give a shit about their job, only getting paid. Like most anywhere else.
@Tzor: I just think with not everyone being able to read or write English, their native language, then trying to have them learn a second one, when they don't have the first one down yet is fucked up.
You cannot understand another language if you don't understand your own well enough to be able to translate and compare the two, no matter what Rosetta Stone software says.
Also you neglect about taxes, that not everyone HAS a computer or internet in which to use those tax programs. Some do, but don't even understand them. So not only do they need to know how to do taxes, but now have to add a level of complexity because they also have to learn to use a computer?
Play the game, not the rules.

“Supposed” is the key word. I never was good in upper body strength to really pull myself up on a rope. I never was good at dodgeball but I always had fun. On the other hand, those climbing walls with the handholds and the protective harnesses … I might have been good at that.Crissa wrote:Climbing a rope and playing dodgeball are supposed to be fun.
In college I got stuck with the “new” aerobics … NOT FUN!
Now R.P.I. has a new athletic facility and every student is encouraged into some level of sports. As our President stated, “with this addition to the Troy campus, we continue to transform the student experience, to go beyond the standard, to excel–across the board, in all endeavors–and to do even more to create leaders. At the same time, with the initiation of the village concept, we bring our Rensselaer community together in a new way. Our goal — as with all that are doing to transform Rensselaer for the 21st century–is to create a unique residential undergraduate college within a world-class technological research university.”
The chairman of the Board of Trustees stated, “ECAV will elevate the Rensselaer student experience–minds, bodies, and spirits–for all of our students–for varsity athletes, and those who play club sports, for everyone who plays on an intramural team, and for the entire Rensselaer community” Knowles said. “Elevating the quality of the student experience is key to this transformation, and athletics is one avenue toward creating a world-class undergraduate residential community.”
The arguments to a college campus applies also to a high school campus; mind, body and spirit all need to be considered in the education experience.
I get where you are coming from, but paintball is VERY different.tzor wrote:Adults play “dodgeball” with guns that shoot blobs of paint. I don't, but I know many who do.shadzar wrote:Do you go around today playing dodgeball?
1- you have padding and protective gear IF your are not a dumbass.
2- dodgeball with a hard rubber ball with no padding and only shorts can cause broke bones, major bruises and burns (not just abrasions the rubber burns the skin off with heat not only scratches)
3- You are given a choice with paintball, you aren't forced to play it.
I thought America was all about the choices, but it is only so long as it is choices that other people would make right?
There is a reason that many adults do NOT play dodgeball with the inflated ball.
I guess all tall people are supposed to like basketball, and all blacks are supposed to like football right? (not directed exclusively to you Tzor) This is the same shit where simply asking would do a world of wonders. I bet you could find things people would do if given a chacne to choose for themselves. I never met but ONE person that didn't like 4-square, and they were NOT the one in a wheelchair, but just didn't like it; so they were allowed to skip rope, but the wheelchair bound had to play 4-square. Luckily he liked it and was good because the upper arm strength! (too good if you ask me! I think he was on steroids!
But seriously....asking someone what they like goes a lot farther than trying to tell them what they like. Because I have long hair I have been accused of riding crotch-rocket. Because I am tall I have been accused of liking basketball. Because I can shoot rifles well I have been thought to like them.....
I like car, not bugs in my teeth.
I like soccer and volleyball (neither ever offered in school).
I like archery. Never had a bow in my hand beyond the rubber dart one as a child.
People need to stop thinking for others and ask in regards to many things. PE especially where you can ask what they like, and let people participate in something they have interest in, and you might find they stay interested longer and participate longer.
Sure you want to give people chances to try things out, but let them fucking decide WHAT to try out, rather than forcing them. Sports isn't like needing fiber in your diet from broccoli and brussel sprouts (always love those things, might make some for dinner).
Paintball is fun, but the gun aspect kind of also separates it from dodgeball by far in why people play. Also you don't have to try to catch the balls, and you can hide behind stuff rather than standing out in the open. I do NOT think they need to offer it in schools, but would NOT object to it if a curriculum included it with some of the science behind it. Velocity, PSI, etc being taught about it.
Play the game, not the rules.

What I'd like to know is why you seem to think we should cut things like PE and history because a subset of people can't read. Yes, people should get education in basic areas of survival and competence. That goes without saying. It also doesn't mean that anybody should cut PhysEd from school curriculums - it means that they should teach the things they are already teaching less poorly.
There is already home economics, mathematics, and English taught in schools. Nobody here is seriously suggesting removing those or not teaching them. Whether a subset of those going through the school system don't learn what they need to know isn't because PE and history are taking time out of the day, it's because the classes that contain what people "need to learn" are handled like crap.
Cutting other courses outright will not improve the situation any more than throwing yet more money at the problem would. Removal of non-shadzar-approved subjects just removes those subjects, which reduces educational levels overall. That's a bad thing.
You're recognizing the problem alright, but your proposed solution is actively harmful and nonsensical.
